A publisher does three core jobs. It administers the songs, registering them, issuing licences, chasing the right paperwork. It collects the money the songs earn from around the world. And it exploits the songs, actively getting them recorded, placed in , and played, so they earn more.
In return, the publisher takes a share of the income. The songwriter keeps the rest, and crucially keeps the writer share that is theirs by right.
