Take a client whose track has been streaming steadily in the US for a year. Their distributor statement shows recording royalties from Spotify and Apple Music, but nothing for "mechanical royalties" from a body called the MLC, which many UK artists have never heard of.

That client is almost certainly owed money they have never seen. It is sitting in what the industry calls the "black box."
